A contractor quoting a heat pump installation in St. Joseph County has to treat local weather as a design input, not an afterthought. 122 severe weather events were recorded in St. Joseph County, Michigan between 2015 and 2024. At that rate, severe weather is a standing feature of the operating environment, which means decisions about equipment sizing, refrigerant line routing, and mounting placement carry real consequences. A unit installed to minimum spec in a county where the air puts this kind of sustained demand on the system will be working harder than its ratings assume from the first heating season. Contractors who know the area build that load into their specifications before they order anything.

A basement or crawlspace with a large galvanized metal duct and insulated flexible duct running along wood floor joists above a concrete block wall, with two cardboard boxes and a coiled corrugated hose on the concrete floor.

Ductwork sized and routed for a different generation of equipment sits inside a large share of homes here. Half the homes in St. Joseph County, Michigan were built in 1970 or earlier (2020-2024 ACS 5-year). A heat pump moves air differently than what many of these systems were built to handle, and a contractor assessing an installation job opens registers, checks trunk dimensions, and traces the run before the new unit is ever ordered. If the duct layout cannot deliver the airflow a heat pump requires, that gets corrected first. The electrical service gets the same look, since the panel feeding the old system may not carry what the new one draws.

What Gets Installed With a New Heat Pump

Isometric cutaway illustration of a single-story house showing interior rooms with ductwork, a furnace or air handler, and refrigerant lines running outside to a condenser unit on a pad.

The outdoor unit is the piece most homeowners see first. It sits on a pad beside the house and holds the compressor and the outdoor coil, which together do the work of moving heat between outside air and the refrigerant lines. Inside, the air handler mounts in a utility room, basement, or closet and pushes conditioned air through the home.

A refrigerant line set runs between the outdoor unit and the air handler, carrying refrigerant back and forth through insulated copper tubing. The thermostat goes on an interior wall and gives the homeowner control over the whole system. A condensate drain line runs from the air handler to a floor drain or outdoors to carry away moisture collected during operation.

The drawing shows a typical layout, and a licensed contractor determines what fits the specific conditions of your house.
